Homeowners who haven’t the budget to go out and design and build a whole new residential walkway may find this blog and its content quite useful.   The team here at Harpeth Valley Hardscapes wants to offer our valued clients some important insight on how they can improve their home and property’s curb appeal without having to drain their wallets.

If you are looking to improve your curb appeal by improving the appearance of your current walkway, then you may want to consider repairing or refinishing concrete whether it is stained or cracked.  You can accomplish this task by using an overlay or veneers.  Overlays effectively blend polymer resins with a variety of substances, including sand and cement.  When applied in layers over the current concrete of your walkway you can improve not only its appearance but its performance and lifespan as well.

Veneers perform in almost the same way, however, they are not comprised of polymer resins, but rather are made from fiber enforced concrete, which can be laid over the existing concrete on your walkway so as to improve its appearance, performance and its overall lifespan.

If you are looking to further enhance the aesthetic appeal and value of your front entranceway you may want to add a few new steps since they are not only practical but provide a safety measure for your home.  Steps make it a whole lot easier and a great deal safer to maneuver about your home and property and can be a very simple design, or if you choose, a more complex design, but can be created to satisfy your individual taste, style and budget.

Finally, if you are still looking for a more inexpensive way to improve your residential walkway there is a more cost-effective approach you can take.  To update your current walkway, you may find the use of stone or pavers to be more fitting to your style and budget.  There are a variety of options you can choose from to make your old, weathered, unattractive walkway look newer and fresher.

Like any other type home improvement project or upgrade you make to your home, proper care and maintenance are critical to preserving your new upgrade or your new investment.  From joint re-sanding and cleaning to sealing, it’s important to give proper care and maintenance to your new or improved walkway install.

Joint Re-sanding – Joint re-sanding is a technique used with existing paver stones.  The procedure is a bit more expensive and requires more time and attention to detail, but is sure to leave you a whole lot more satisfied for a much longer period of time.  This quality technique involves sweeping high quality Polymeric Joint Sand into the paver stones existing joints.  It is then compacted and dampened with water.

Sealing –   Sealing is an ideal way to upgrade your paver stones and is performed in conjunction with cleaning.  Use a semi-gloss finish and seal your paver surface with a natural, clear or wet look.

Cleaning – Cleaning, though one of the simplest ways to maintain any hardscaping, is also very effective.  Typically, a stripping agent is used to remove any prior sealants and residue, and a hardscape cleaner is then utilized to remove ground in dirt, all types of staining and oxidation as well.
