Are you like so many other homeowners and always looking for home improvement projects that can enhance both the aesthetic appeal of your home as well as its value? Often times homeowners choose to add a deck, patio or even a sidewalk of pathway to their outdoor living space in their efforts to make it more functional and appealing. There are a number of hardscape designs you can choose from to accomplish this very task, but determining what is best in the long term can be difficult. Stamped concrete is typically a popular option since it is less costly than other materials. However, with regard to the long-term benefits of this concrete choice, there are a number of concerns.

Stamped concrete presents with a number of problems and our team wants to share some insight with you. For starters, it cracks and chips very easily, especially in colder temperatures where snow, ice and frost are present. Cold weather can be rather hard on many concrete surfaces. For instance, salt put on roadways in the cold weather months, can be brought onto a driveway or concrete surface by vehicles causing damage to the surface. When damage occurs, the surface becomes aesthetically unattractive. However, more important, damaged concrete surfaces can present with a safety issue, including that of tripping and fall down hazards.
Further, stamped concrete is not easily repaired when chips or cracks occur on the surface. You typically cannot replace separate sections of the surface, but rather, over time, will find it necessary to replace the entire driveway or other surface.
Finally, stamped concrete should be sealed at least every 2-3 years. The surface, typically fades over time, and if tinted, will leave you with a color hue that is quite different than the original surface shade. This type of concrete loses its color and can cause noticeable and unattractive spotting.
